October is the time for Genesis – a weekend retreat for 6th-12th grade youth with opportunities to meet new people, participate in entertaining activities, enjoy awesome music and hear about Jesus and the wonderful flavors of life that He has in store for us. The gathering is a wonderful time for youth groups to get together and grow as a community. At this year’s Genesis, participants gathered to hear the fundamental elements of the Gospel presented in a fun and entertaining manner: through talks, dramas, music, and building relationships between leaders and their students. The Office for Faith Formation of the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado sponsors this annual weekend; it supports, but does not replace, the youth ministries of the churches throughout the Diocese. The leaders who came to Genesis with their youth groups did a wonderful job of supporting and leading their youth through the weekend.
This year’s theme was “Taste and See that the Lord is Good” from Psalm 34, so it was filled with fun food and culinary entertainment. Canon Neil Riley was the speaker for the weekend, and he did a wonderful job speaking on his sabbatical to the Holy Land (which he was preparing to depart for at last year’s Genesis), and also gave a fun culinary show for all the youth and leaders. The weekend also included a “Saturday Night Coffee House Taste Test” where each youth group brought their most creative and delicious snack to share with others. Participants also had the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with Bishop O’Neill.
For many years the diocese has held this event at Young Life’s beautiful Frontier Ranch in Buena Vista, Colorado. The participants were surrounded by the gorgeous mountain scenery as they experienced true community and the love of Jesus Christ. This year’s event hosted 373 participants total, with 310 youth and leaders and 63 staff and work crew members helping to make the weekend happen.
