The Episcopal Summer Camps of the Diocese of Colorado is excited to offer a Wilderness Camp component to the 2008-year program!

What is it?

The Wilderness Camp mission is to provide young people with high quality, safe, adventure experiences where they have the opportunity to hike through the beautiful Colorado backcountry. Most importantly, we desire to facilitate their belief, growth, and maturity in Jesus Christ. This is accomplished by providing challenging, small group outdoor adventures where young people are encouraged to examine their lives in relation to God.  We also facilitate learning about God’s creation and our responsibility to be good stewards of what God has given us.

This year’s backpacking journey will take place in the Uncompahgre Wilderness in Southwestern Colorado.  The week-long (6 days and 5 nights in the backcountry) backpacking journey is a community building experience like none other.  Participants will grow closer together in a naturally beautiful environment that is far from the usual distractions of everyday life.  We will scale peaks, experience forests, and investigate mountain lakes.  With a group of leaders and campers we will “get away from it all” and learn some backpacking and outdoor experience skills.  But, most importantly, within the beauty of God’s creation found in this spectacular part of Colorado, we hope to encounter the Lord Jesus in a personal and life-changing manner that will deepen our faith.

While all participants will have the opportunity to learn the many skills related to backcountry camping we will also anticipate some small groups that will focus on specific skills such as: orienteering, nature and landscape photography, “leave-no-trace” training, survival skills, or plant and wildlife identification.

Who can participate?

The Wilderness Camp is for those entering grade 10 in the Fall of 2008 through to entering grade 12.  While backpacking experience is not necessary all participants will have to be in good shape and be able to handle mountain backpacking.  The approval of a physician is required.

Please know that this is a “discipleship-level” camp and assumes some experience with Christianity and the church.  We will be going beyond the basics of Christianity and challenging the young people to grow in their faith.

Space is very limited!  There are only 5 spots for guys and 5 spots for girls!

How do I sign up?

You will need to initially register using the regular Student Application Form.

After we have received your Student Application Form you will receive a packet of information and a Wilderness Camp 2007 – Registration Packet that gives you opportunity to tell us more about you.  Feel free to fill out this and the Student Application Form at the same time and send it in to us.

  • Click to download the Wilderness Camp 2008 – Registration Packet.
  • PLEASE NOTE: To offer the best and safest experience possible and due to space and staffing constraints space in Wilderness Camp is limited. We will review your registration based on a number of factors – including your answers to the questions in the supplemental registration pack, and will select a balanced group of ten campers. We will notify all applicants of their status by Wednesday, July 16. For those who will be going with us, your full payment will be due by July 21.

What do I bring?

Episcopal Summer Camps will supply most of the necessary trip equipment including: tents, stoves, food, eating utensils, and climbing gear.  Each individual is responsible for personal equipment and clothing, packs, and boots.  We encourage first timers to borrow and/or rent as much equipment as possible to reduce costs.
